How much do I want to read more? 7/10

Informative book containing a brief history of porn and how it evolved until today.
I find it fascinating that strong addiction, like alcool, food, cigarettes, drugs, games or porn can run men's lives without them being able to take back control of their lives.
Isn't it incredible to destroy one's own life life intentionally, just because you go for the "short-term rush" over the "long term benefit" ?
What's interesting is we all do that, to various degrees. I mean, doing things we know to be harmful, and yet, we can't stop doing it. If you're not convinced, take the "bad toughts", most of us are not even concious about doing it, or thing we have no control over it.

INTRODUCTION

I count him braver who overcomes his desires than him who conquers his enemies; for the hardest victory is over self.

-- Aristotle

Each time they felt sexual excitement and had an orgasm when they masturbated, a ‘spritz of dopamine’, the reward neurotransmitter, consolidated the connections made in the brain during the sessions. it provoked none of the embarrassment they felt purchasing Playboy at a store. Here was a behaviour with no ‘punishment’, only reward.

It can make us hyper-aroused by our favourite enticements, such that immediate wants weigh heavier than they should relative to longer term desires.

That could mean that regular consumption of pornography more or less wears out your reward system.

Test: masturbate with no porn and without fantasising about porn. A healthy young man should have no trouble attaining a full erection and masturbating to orgasm without porn or porn fantasy.

"I’ve battled a few addictions in my life, from nicotine to alcohol and other substances. I’ve overcome all of them, and this was by far the most difficult. Urges, crazy thoughts, sleeplessness, feelings of hopelessness, despair, worthlessness, and many more negative things were all part of what I went through with this porn thing. It’s a wicked awful thing that I will never have to deal with ever again in my life – ever."
